Our Soil Profile Tubes are a hands-on activity allowing students to create their own soil profile using real materials representing each soil horizon. All grade levels can enjoy this lesson, although it is closely aligned with 3rd grade VA SOLs. Students receive a short lesson about soil formation and soil horizons before building their soil profile tube. Total Time: 25 minutes, depending on number of students.
While Headwaters SWCD can provide the lesson and materials for the horizons, we cannot provide the plastic tubes. Teachers/event organizers must obtain these for their students. Education staff can provide recommendations of tubes to purchase.
