Education & Outreach Resources

Below is general information of each of the education and outreach opportunities the district offers.

  • Underground Classroom

    This 22-ft trailer serves as a mobile education exhibit that focuses on Soil & Soil Health. It can be booked for schools, festivals, fairs and other special events (fees apply).

  • Envirothon

    The Dominion Energy Envirothon is a free, natural resources competition for High School students (grades 9-12) and Middle School students (grades 6-8).

  • Environmental Education Workshops

    The Project WILD program is an interdisciplinary conservation and environmental education activity guide that focuses on wildlife and conservation for all educators.

  • Annual Poster Contest

    The Annual Conservation Poster Contest provides kindergarten through twelfth grade students an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resource issues through art.

  • Annual Photo Contest

    The Photo Contest is run by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, the district that oversees all of Virginia. This page provides information on what it’s about, how to find information on the contest, and the overall winner of the year.

  • Camp Woods & Wildlife

    This residential camp for students in grades 13-16 years old (as of June 20), sponsored by the VA Department of Forestry, is held around the 3rd week of June each year at Holiday Lake 4-H Center near Appomattox.

  • Scholarship Program

    The Headwaters SWCD Student Scholarship program and the VASWCD Educational Foundation scholarship program promotes the education of Virginia citizens in technical fields with a natural resource conservation and environmental protection emphasis. The program provides financial support to students majoring in or showing a strong desire to major in a course curriculum related to natural resource conservation and/or environmental studies.

  • School Programs

    We offer several classroom programs on a variety of topics, such as soils, watersheds, wildlife and forestry. In addition, we also offer Career Fair displays.

  • Scout Patch Program

    The VASWCD Scout Patch Program is open to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to further their interest and education in conservation topics. Virginia Scouts can follow the instructions to earn a Soil Expert Patch and/or Living in Your Watershed Patch.

  • Youth Conservation Camp (YCC)

    The Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VASWCD) sponsors a week-long summer conservation camp for Virginia high school students (currently enrolled in grades 9th-12th) on the campus of Virginia Tech.

  • Youth Conservation Leadership Institute (YCLI)

    Youth Conservation Leadership Institute (YCLI) is a recognition program for students in 9th- 12th grade that focuses on volunteer service and environmental stewardship.
